Turtle Hatchery

Turtle hatchery, operated by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka, was established in 1981 to protect Sri Lanka’s turtles from extinction. Huge tanks filled with new born turtle hatchlings can be seen here. At a distance of few kilometers from Galle, situated at Kosgoda, Dist. Galle, huge tanks filled with new born turtle hatchlings can be seen at turtle hatchery.

After being fed, the baby turtles are taken to the sea and released when they are 2-4 days old. Turtle hatchery is a perfect place for animal lovers. Although October to April is the main laying season, some eggs can be found at Kosgoda throughout the year. Bring your camera as you will have an opportunity to photograph the turtles at various stages in their development before they finally leave the hatchery.
