Sri Lanka – Beach Travel Guide

Beaches is something that is not at all scarce in Sri Lanka. There is 1340 km stretch of coastline in Sri Lanka that extends from the famous tourist destinations in the South Coast to the less visited expanses of North and East. Large part of Sri Lanka’s coastline is surrounded by coral reef that makes it ideal for travellers to dive into the ocean’s world filled of colorful life. Tourists can also enjoy snorkelling in the southern beaches like Hikkaduwa Marine Sanctuary. There is also a huge influx of tourists who come to enjoy surfing on the gentle waves of Indian Ocean.

The waves are very good in Arugam Bay on the east coast, and along the south coast at Hikkaduwa and Mirissa, for enjoying surfing. There are also places with calm water perfect for swimming like at Unawatuna, near Galle, and Nilaveli. Bentota is the unofficial water-sports capital for travellers because aside from its rolling surf and beautiful sandy beaches, it also has a river where beginners can gain experience before heading into the ocean.

Southern Coast Beaches

Southern Coast of Sri Lanka has some beautiful set of tourist beaches. Southern coast has some pristine beaches, diving and snorkeling opportunities, sites having their base in history and several other interesting places. On top of the visitors’ list remains Galle. There are also opportunities to access several national parks here like Bundala and Yala.

Western Coast Beaches

The South West Coast of Sri Lanka has some pretty sandy beaches and mangrove fringed lagoons. There are numerous resorts located on the coastline with roads and rails running parallel to the coastline. Travellers can also find ancient temples and waterfalls in the region.

Eastern Coast Beaches

Eastern coast of Sri Lanka have seemingly unending beaches, great surf and mangrove lagoons. However, the East Coast has been largely off the tourist map due to past civil unrest. However, recently after the end of civil war, the place is being developed as a tourist destination. Local people would greet you warmly there. Ideal time to visit the east coast is May to September.
