Reach Nuwara Eliya by Road - After tourists reach Colombo (Capital city) by air, there are two main routes to get to Nuwara-Eliya – via Kandy or via Hatton. Both roads are narrow, bumpy and windy but both have incredible scenic views for travellers. Nuwara Eliya is about 76 km from Kandy or 180 km from Colombo.

Travellers can reach Nuwara Eliya by taking intercity bus to Hatton from Colombo and then Nuwara Eliya intercity bus from Hatton. Buses going to Nuwara Eliya leave Colombo almost hourly, and from Kandy with regular frequency. Fare costs about Rs.350 from Colombo (AC bus) and about Rs.250 from Kandy; other normal bus costs Rs.270 from Colombo and costs Rs.150 from Kandy. To travel by car or van, the Hatton road is preferable as the road itself is a bit better, less busy and the climb is not quite as steep. Plus, tourists gets to see the spectacular view from the St.Clair’s Tea Center in Talawakele. From Colombo, travellers can take a rented van that will cost Rs.6000-7000 and from Kandy Rs.3000-4000.

Reach Nuwara Eliya by Train - Nuwara Eliya doesn’t have a railway station, and can be reached from Nanu Oya. Nanu Oya railway station falls on Colombo-Kandy route, but the route takes longer than bus route. A second class ticket from Colombo is about Rs.225. You will have to get off at Nanu Oya station and hire a taxi (about Rs.200) or bus (Rs.25).

Getting Around in Nuwara Eliya - Nuwara-Eliya is a small town and everything is within walking distance. However, tuk-tuks are available near the post Office and Cargills Supermarket, Nuwara-Eliya. A ride anywhere within Nuwara Eliya should cost around Rs.70-100.

Shopping in Nuwara Eliya - A tourist can enjoy shopping in Nuwara Eliya, if you are good in bargaining. You can shop for souvenirs like silk, batiks, masks, figurines, local music tapes and textile items and the famous Ceylon tea.

Best Time to Visit Nuwara Eliya - Nuwara Eliya has cool climate (Avg.temperature-16C) all around the year; it can be quite cold at night in winters. However, as the tropical sun climbs in the sky, day time in Nuwara Eliya becomes warm.
