Reach Hambantota by Air: Nearest Airport to Hambantota is Bhandarnayake International airport, Colombo, which is the international airport of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is also getting another international airport at Hambantota, which was launched on November 27th 2009 and is currently under construction.
Reach Hambantota by Train: There are no trains to Hambantota at the moment. Tourists can take train from Colombo to Matara, which takes about 4- 4 1/2 hours. From Matara, travellers needs to take a bus ride (2 hours journey) to Hambantota.
Sri Lanka government has plans to get the rail route constructed to Hambantota before 2018 Common wealth games planned in Sri Lanka.
Reach Hambantota by Road: The public intercity buses go to Hambantota and will take around 8 hours from Colombo. Hiring a car is a better option for tourists as there are two routes to travel to Hambantota from Colombo – one is by the Galle road, which goes all the way around the coast to Hambantota but takes around 7-8 hours, depending on traffic. The other shorter route is via Avissawella/ Ratnapura route which can take one to the district in 5 hours, especially to the Tissamaharama area.
It is recommended that a car or the cheaper van be hired by tourists for traveling within Hambantota district, even if one arrived at the district using public transport as it is so much easier and time-saving to go directly to the sites travellers wants to visit.
