Close to Tangalle, a turtle breeding beach at village Rekawa is a perfect place for animal lovers. Tourists can find five out of eight known species of turtles who visits the island to lay eggs. Turtles are now a protected species in Sri Lanka.
Situlpawwa temple is a beautiful very old temple that was once a well known Buddhist monastery. Situlpawwa temple is located in the Hambantota district and is considered to be an important historical site for Buddhist teachings. Situlpawwa is a cave complex with its cave temple being 67 feet high and 30 feet long. Travellers can also find ancient inscriptions in the cave temple.
Martello tower, located just a few meters south of the Hambanthota Rest House, was built by the British Empire in late 18th century. Martello Tower is about 25 feet in height and 40 feet in diameter with two stories. There is a lighthouse, a bungalow and gallows close to the tower.
