Hiyare reservoir, located about 14 km from Galle on the Udugama Road, is a natural reservoir situated in the district of Galle,. Hiyare reservoir is bordered by 600 acres of secondary lowland rainforest established in 1911 and is frequented by tourists for its shear natural beauty.
Covered by 55 acres, Hiyare is a major source of drinking water to the city of Galle. Hiyare Biodiversity Park is administered by the Galle Municipal Council. The Wildlife Conservation Society of Galle has a small office inside and the members freely volunteer their time to guide visitors. Tickets are on sale from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. The gates close at 6.00 pm.
