Dehiwala zoological garden, 10 km south of Colombo Fort, is located in a beautiful landscape covering an area of 11 acres. Started by a German business family in 1926, Dehiwala Zoo was acquired by the Sri Lankan government in 1930. Tourists can find variety of species at Dehiwala Zoo including mammal species, birds, reptiles, fish species and endangered species. Dehiwala zoo has a Reptile House Aviary, Nocturnal House, Butterfly Park and Swan Pond. The most attractive event at Dehiwala Zoo for tourists is the evening elephant show, starting at about 5.15 pm.
