Prominent Buddhist temples of Colombo are Vajiramaya temple at Bambalapitiya, Raja Maha Viharaya at Bellanwalia and Gothami Viharaya at Borella. The most important Buddhist centre for Buddhist tourists, the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara is only 8 km to the north east of the Colombo and is famous for its unique wall paintings and sculpture. Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara in Colombo has images of reclining and preaching Buddha along with frescoes depicting incidents from his life.
Gangaramaya near the Beira Lake is another beautiful temple in Colombo City. Gothami Viharaya at Borella is famous among travellers for its wall paintings. Paramanada Purana Viharaya in Kotahena was founded in 1806 and Dipaduttamaramaya in Kotahena is the oldest Buddhist temple in Colombo.
